Hunter asked if we could learn the state capitals to get him ahead and ready for fourth grade. We printed giant maps of the US at kinkos for each of them and had them label the name and capital of each state. We played three different games with our maps. One was bingo. I asked the kids to select 15 states and place a mini marshmallow, chocolate chip or skittle on it. Then I shuffled cards I have with all the states on them. I randomly read off the state and the first child to eat all of their treats won. We also made a ticket to ride like game. Lastly, Hunter suggested turning it into a game of risk. We divided the country into regions and played risk with armies from our Lord of the Rings risk game. There was some feet dragging here and there but overall it was a positive learning project.
